Louisiana Folks

Fishing Trip Photos, Highlighted Species Smallies
Vilas, Wisconsin, Guided by: Bolander
Today its raining and cool. Good thing we fished the past two days. Had a great time with clients from Louisiana who came up here to see how we'all fish!! Our goal was to catch every species, except Musky, and get them in the boat. And we did. SM Bass, LM bass, rock bass, northerns, crappies (socele), perch, bluegill (brim), and walleye. And they were some nice fish. Client Chuck even caught a few crawfish to make him feel at home! The key was the same as always. Find green weed edges or humps next to deeper water. Use the lightest jig possible to get to the depth you desire and use different baits and jigs until you find what works. Normally I'm not a jig color guy but when fishing for smallies on a deep hump it was client Linda's favorite color green that worked exclusively! She was the only one catching fish and I remarked that I was proud and put a green one on myself and caught two fish right away. We also found crawlers and wacky worms to be the ticket for the LM bass.
Hey, don't forget to take a kid fishing and HAVE FUN!
Another nice smallie.

Mike and Mary

Fishing Trip Photos, Highlighted Species Crappie
Vilas, Wisconsin, Guided by: Bolander
I was the "gift" a friend gave Mike and Mary yesterday to learn how to fish the Manitowish Chain. Mike and Mary have just purchased a vacation home on the chain and were looking at getting a crash course on the chain. We started out fishing real early for walleyes. Slow drag with crawlers was the ticket but as some of you know this is a knack acquired. After about an hour Mike got his first walleye buy doing it 'just right!' It wasn't long before the sun was out and it got tough. We boated 8 walleyes and kept 4. They were all small.
So we decided to try for panfish. We switched over to plastics, different colors, to see what might work. It was slow. Mary was very inexperienced at throwing a spinning reel and could not get it very far from the boat. So I put on a spring bobber for extra weight and we practiced how to throw, retrieve and 'read' a bobber. Well Mary took to it right off. She started boating big bluegill and crappie very quickly. She offered to help Mike and I as she was reeling in fish :D We caught crappie up to 13.5" and a few bluegill over 9".
Action slowed again as the sun got brighter so we decided I'd show them some other spots on other lakes on the chain. We met with mild success but they will be able to try them in the future under better weather conditions.
We dropped Mary off at home and Mike and I went back to the area we were getting the panfish. The sun was still bright so I decided we would tie on some beetle spins for three reasons. One, to keep those little buggers from stealing our time, two, to get more distance on our casts as the wind had picked up and three, to cover more ground as we searched for active fish. Bingo. We had many doubles of nice big crappie and bluegill. I had one 'gill that hit like a five pound bass and even pulled drag for a few seconds. I was amazed when it hit the net and it was almost 10"!
A great time was had by all. Just one more day that proved you need to stay flexible in your approach and methods. The fish will eventually tell you what they want.
Hey, don't forget to take the family fishing and HAVE FUN!

John and April

Fishing Trip Photos, Highlighted Species Crappie
Vilas, Wisconsin, Guided by: Bolander
Had a great morning on the water with clients John and April yesterday. I put the umbrella in the boat to make sure it didn't rain. We started out on a search for walleye and got a few small ones on crawlers but action was slow. John did catch the smallest walleye I've ever had come in my boat, a nice 3.5 incher! After it started raining (the umbrella trick didn't work) I decided we'd should go looking for crappie. We outfitted our hooks with plastics and gulp and headed for some deep and shallow green weeds. Normally I've found that heavy rain does not precipitate the crappie bite but today, bingo. April sat under the umbrella and said she wasn't going to fish until us guys proved there were active fish! Well, it didn't take long as John started off with a nice ten incher and many followed. April immediately stated, 'bait my pole!" A piece of gulp 2' underneath a cork, twitched, was the ticket right away. I didn't get my line back in the water before she pulled in 3 fish including a beautiful 9.5" bluegill. We had many doubles and a few triples. And the rain even let up! Lots of fun. We kept about 40 fish and threw at least that many back. One of the joys of fishing, besides catching a pile of fish, is meeting interesting folks like John and a April.
Hey, don't forget to take the family fishing and HAVE FUN!
